INTRODUCTION
The idea has been kicked around among Blackflag4x4.com admin for some time now,
a competition showcasing some of the best terrain found on Vancouver Island.
The plan was laid out and registration quickly filled up with willing competitors sporting some well built machines. We found a killer camping spot near Burnt Bridge in the Shawnigan Lake area.
The folks at Sunny Daze riverside campground treated us with unexpected hospitality. These people went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable and carefree as possible, we highly recommend them to anyone planning a simple family trip or a large club event.
We also had some really great support from local businesses and businessmen. Thanks to Dave and Brent for getting sponsors together (sponsors listed below). Another thanks goes out to Island4x4.com, specifically Jonathan Poole. These guys do alot for the island wheelin' scene and have scouted some very extreme trails.
In talking with Jo we came up with a loose trail plan and we were off to the trails...

Day one
Trail: Wipeout

We split the trail into 4 sections with course marshals scoring competitors according to the event rules.
The trail was marked to get the most of the natural obstacles and make a difficult trail that much more technical.
We ran the trail on a first come first serve basis, competitors stepped up quickly to run this first trail of the Island Cup.
Wipeout starts with a steep rock ledge that stands about 4.5 ft tail, it requires a little wheel speed to be tackled.
It's not the hardest of spots but it has proven many trucks undoing in the past. On this particular day the most noteworthy victim to this wall was Uncle Jesse. A relatively new turbo injected propane set up on his 22RE provided the makings of a great show for spectators, Jesse approached the wall and when the turbo spooled up his rig launched hard and came down even harder. The result was front leaf packs sheered off clean at the perches rendering him a DNF for the first day.
Once the wall is cleared the incline to the top of the trail starts off, about a quarter of the way up the hill are two trees and a ledge that have been known to punish sheet metal and drive lines. I thought for sure that the big guy of our group ( Trooper on fullsize gear) would be doomed at this section, but Paul squeezed his rig through the trees but had to winch the ledge.
From there the trail continues upward, there is a rather slick little muddy hill into sweeping corner and a small rock section. This section ends between two more trees and yet another ledge. One of our mainland competitors learned here that chrome rims and low air pressure made for a bad combo. After a clever tree climb Aaron lost not one but two beads, a glimpse into what would become a trend for Aaron throughout the event. The third section started once competitors cleared that previous nasty section. A huge undercut root about 5ft. deep at it's deepest on a 90 degree turn stopped every single rig, not one made it through without a winch despite gallant efforts by all.
The final section came (much like a quentin tarentino movie) at the beginning. Section Four was marked in such away that drivers had to tackle a large slick log sideways in a dense mud area. It looked allot easier then it turned out to be, every rig put on a show getting through this section.
Once all were through the trail it was decided we would return to camp to eat and repair and decide whether or not to run more that evening.

All in all day one went smooth and was allot of fun.

After returning to camp I ran to town for some supplies, upon returning our weekend had taken an interesting twist. The forestry company that runs the land beyond Burnt Bridge had decided to close the gate leading to the very trail systems we had hoped to access. We made phone calls, we searched maps and contacted various agencies and people of assumed authority. We still don't believe what they did was legal as it is a main road and a public one at that, yet we had little choice but to drum up a new plan. There are other avenues into the back country but we decided to exercise the main roads and did so to get to the desired trails for day two.

DAY TWO
Trail: Carnage Alley ( Backwards)

Again the trail was split into 4 brutal sections, but this time we gave it a twist.
jo-jo said with a sly grin tell them they are running backwards, I quickly thought about it and it made perfect sense.
Instantly anyone that had run the trail before had no advantage. Carnage Alley is a very hardcore trail, backwards it ridiculous.
The first section starts with a direct drop into the trail from the access road, at once you have a soupy mud and rut section. It's deep and it's thick, competitors had to navigate through this and over a large tree that ran lengthwise. The caused drivers and rigs work hard to overcome the section until reaching two tight trees to end the section and begin the next one.The second section was more muck and slick stuff leading up to a very nasty stump that demanded rigs push hard against a tree and itself. This section took it's toll and the best was still ahead. The third section was a rock wall about 6ft high before heading to the left and ending between two trees. This wall was said to be impossible and many drivers moaned and groaned about it.
We made this worth an additional 25 points for those that cleared the section.
One after another the drivers tried that section and one after another the winches spooled out in defeat.
However some clever stacking and driving got Big Ern up the wall! No one could believe it yet there he was attempting to make the exit of the third section. I thought about it and checked my score sheet, sure enough if he had cleared this and then the section four he would be in the lead from Third place! As I was walking over to give him the news I heard the noise that spoiled it all. Two more beads off the rims to bring the total 5.
It was decided to still award him the bonus pt's. for the wall climb and they went about getting him set up for the final section.
The Fourth Section ended at the top of the wall and started with a slight off camber drop into a trench, markers were placed to make drivers maneuver themselves off camber and limit their ability to square off. It worked and made the sections start that much more difficult, but it's this sections end that was the real catch. A huge rock affectionately named Brutus acts as a gate keeper for those entering or exiting Carnage Alley.
Brutus takes his job pretty seriously and stood tall to those that tried to get out. Rob G lost a driveshaft to Brutus and Brutus inflicted unreal stress on the competitors suspension. Although many thought Brutus would be the monster of the course the middle sections provided most of the days action. Carnage alley lived up to it's name, it left drivers and rigs beaten and tired we returned to camp approaching midnight, hungry cold and wondering what more lay ahead.

DAY THREE

Trail: Proving grounds

When you have to start off saying nobody is perfect or shit happens you just know the following isn't golden.
The final day of Island Cup 2006 and the fatigue and patch worked plans were finally catching up with us.
One of the towing competitors left his lights on in his tow rig about 20 minutes back down through the Redballs course. It was decided that Mud Monkey would make his way back to the rig to shut off the lights while the rest of the crew would proceed ahead. Unfortunately lost in translation was the fact that only Jo knew where the prooving grounds were. Somehow the group got split up, with half following jo, and the other half searching for the right route to take through the maze of logging roads. Thankfully Dirt Bag came back down to round us up and we were on our way to the trail.
When we finally came into the clearing that has been dubbed the Prooving grounds I was amazed.
The area is all rock and there are some seriously killer lines in pretty much every direction.
jo-jo was already marking out sections and competitors were eager to get going, but the mornings happenings were still affecting the run, it was late in the day already and we hadn't even finished the layout.
There was alot of disorganized discussion and some scoring changes to fit the terrain.
We had finally started to get things moving when almost on queue it began to rain and the wind started to pick up. This made the rocks extremely slick and the sections that were laid out absolutely unforgiving.
Uncle Jesse cleared the first section, which was dominated by a rock wall covered in roots from a stump,
U_Can_2 also cleared section one with some very nice driving.
At this point we were pushing even harder to get through this day, the rain and wind were now foul and making things pretty unpleasant. Jesse was on section two and his crazy off camber attempt was becoming interesting.
Some of us had moved over to section two to watch Jesse's attempt, behind us a v-8 could be heard coming up the other side of the ledge, there peering over the edge was a Jeep front fender high in the air at an angle that there was no getting out of. The Jeep flopped hard on it's drivers side in a crash of metal and rock.
Fearing the worst spectators jumped down and rounded the corner, Jack was laying there under his Jeep with eyes as big as saucers. The roll bar had landed on his foot pinning him, with a little manpower we managed to lift the Jeep off Jacks foot and we got him down to the first aid people. Once the Jeep was righted it was decided that this day was not meant to be. Too many loose ends had taken it's toll and we called a drivers meeting. We agreed to call it a day and return to camp, there were enough points from the previous days wheelin' to award prizes and most of us were just happy to returning to camp in one piece at that point.
After a short drive back to the Redballs area spirits were once again high and all were laughing and joking as usual. The group split up and we headed back to Sunny Daze to eat drink and be merry.

Monday morning it was raining and typical wet coast weather, we gathered around under a tarp where sponsors were listed off and the points were broken down. Thanks to Roadkill and the Beav a prize table was properly organized and in order of finsihing competitors stepped up to claim their prizes.
Tired, wet and cold, yet strangely not wanting any of it to end, we took to packing up our camps and heading for home....

So there were twists and turns, there was serious carnage and the event changed from the original game plan.
However in the end it turned out to be one of the most relaxed and fun events I've attended with a group of wheelers. Thanks to killer trails and serious competitors The first ever Island cup layed a solid foundation for next years challenge. I for one look forward to next spring, with more time to plan and develop more challenging areas the Island will continue to be set the bar for extreme offroad trails on in the Northwest.
Thanks to all that attended! and we'll see you next year for round two.
